WHAT IS PRP or PRP therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a non-surgical regenerative procedure.
It involves concentrating a patient’s own blood, separating out the platelets, which are then injected to stimulate the healing process through localised injections.

Platelets are the part of the blood that aid in clotting, and they play an important role in healing and regeneration.
The growth factors present in PRP help reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration, including cartilage.
Stimulating the production of new cells and collagen!
The PRP that is extracted, has 5-10 times the concentration of growth factors compared to normal blood and contain more than 1000% of the platelets.

What are the benefits of PRP?

The benefits of PRP injections are that it is a minimally invasive, low-pain and natural method of accelerating healing in soft-tissue conditions and injuries.

Is platelet rich plasma safe?

Platelet rich plasma injections offer a relatively safe treatment option because there is no risk of adverse reactions as the plasma is the patient’s own; however, it does carry with it the relatively minor risks of infection or nerve damage.

How long does it take for PRP injections to work for beauty treatments?

The benefits of PRP injections may take between four and six weeks to be noticeable to the patient. Even beyond this window, the platelet-rich plasma will continue to aid in further healing for anywhere from six and nine months.

How long does platelet-rich plasma last?

Platelet-rich plasma lasts anywhere from six and nine months or longer, during which time it will continue to aid in healing the soft-tissue injury.

How often can you have PRP injections?

Your first PRP injection may bring satisfactory relief, and you may not need to have a second PRP injection; however, it is occasionally the case that multiple injections are best for your condition. When it is indicated that multiple injections may be needed, they are delivered four to six weeks apart, on average.

PRP Therapy Risks and Side Effects

A PRP injection is a low-risk procedure and does not usually cause major side effects. The procedure involves a blood draw, so you should make sure you are hydrated and have eaten beforehand to prevent feeling lightheaded. After the procedure, you may experience some soreness and bruising at the injection site.

Because PRP injections are made up of your own cells and plasma, the risk of an allergic reaction is much lower than with other injectable medications like corticosteroids.

Less common risks of PRP injections include:

●     Bleeding

●     Tissue damage

●     Infection

●     Nerve injuries

If you are considering PRP injections, be sure to talk with your health care provider about all the benefits and risks.

Please let us know if you:

●     are taking any blood thinning medications, including aspirin.

●     have a current infection

●     have been told you have a low platelet count

●     are pregnant or are breastfeeding

●     have an allergy to local anaesthetic

If you are taking any Anti-inflammatory medications it may affect platelet function, so should be stopped one week prior to your procedure and for 1 week following PRP treatment.

What is the Post-Procedural Care for PRP?

●     It is normal to feel some discomfort at the injection site for a few days after your procedure.

●     You will be prescribed pain medications as needed by your doctor.

●     You may use cold compresses to alleviate your symptoms.

●     You will be instructed to stop any anti-inflammatory medications.

●     You may resume your normal activities but should avoid any strenuous activities such as heavy lifting or exercises.

●     PRP Injections Recovery Time

●     Gentle activity and rest is advised for the first 48 hours following your PRP injection

●     Following this you can resume your normal activities and commence rehabilitation exercises – your Pain Specialist may recommend follow up with a physiotherapist to help guide your rehabilitation exercises.

●     A moderate amount of discomfort is expected in the 2 – 5 days following the procedure. Simple pain relief medications such as paracetamol are recommended in this period.

●     If you’re concerned about your pain in the post procedure period contact your doctor right away.

●     The effects of PRP injections do not usually occur quickly but you may find that over the course of a few months, you make slow and steady progress and improvements.

Botox Cosmetic Applications
Botox treatment can smooth fine lines and wrinkles in several areas of your face, neck and jawline.

WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is a prescription medication injected into muscles. It is made from a Botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum.
It is used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles and lines.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Botox blocks nerve signals to muscles, by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction, thus causing “flaccid paralysis”.
As a result, injected muscles cannot contract (tense up) and this reduces wrinkles.
These effects are always temporary but can last for several months.
The muscle injected depends on the primary area of concern.
Several areas can be treated in one session.

WHAT SHOULD I DISCLOSE BEFORE TREATMENT?
You must say if you have received any other botulinum toxin products in the last four months or in the past.
Before receiving treatment with Botox, discuss all your medical conditions, particularly if you have a disease(s) that affect your muscles and nerves. All allergies, including allergies to any botulinum toxin products, or if you have experienced any side effect from any other botulinum toxin in the past.
Medical history and all the medicines you take, including:

●     prescription

●     non-prescription medicines

●     vitamins

●     herbal supplements

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE & LAST?
Treatment will usually take about 10-20 minutes. Within three to six months after Botox therapy, the toxins wear off and the muscles regain movement. As a result, wrinkles return and issues like migraines and sweating may resume.
To maintain results, you may choose to receive more Botox injections.
Your healthcare provider can let you know how often to undergo Botox treatment.

HOW DO I KNOW IF BOTOX IS RIGHT FOR ME?
If you are an adult with moderate to severe frown (glabellar) lines, BOTOX may be right for you.
Discuss with Dr Bauer the benefits and risks of treatment in a free initial 15 minute consult.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE THE RESULTS?

You may begin to see visible smoothing as early as 3-4 days after injection. The median first onset of effect was less than a week. The maximum effect occurred at 30 days. The typical duration of effect was up to 3 months in clinical trials but may last significantly longer or shorter in individual patients. After Botox treatment, most people notice the desired effects around the third or fourth day. Full results will be visible within 10 to 14 days.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX?

Botox may cause serious side effects, including allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reactions may include:

●     Itching

●     rash

●     redness

●     swelling

●     wheezing

●     asthma symptoms

●     dizziness or feeling faint

●     flu-like symptoms

●     occasional numbness

Within a few hours to weeks of taking Botox it may cause:

●     loss of strength

●     general muscle weakness

●     blurred vision

●     drooping eyelids

If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities.

Botox aftercare instructions

The goal of Botox aftercare is to encourage optimal treatment results.
It can also minimize the risk of bruising and spreading to other areas.

Generally, on the day you get Botox, it is a good idea to:

●     gently exercise your face

●     relax for the rest of the day

●     maintain a normal heart rate

●     avoid touching, rubbing, or physical pressure on the affected area

●     leave the treated area alone

You can also follow the best practices for Botox aftercare below.

Return to your normal activities

Botox injections do not require any recovery time. Therefore, you will not have to take off work. You can resume your usual activities right after.

Wait 24 hours to exercise

If exercise is part of your daily routine, wait at least 24 hours to work out. Your doctor might suggest waiting for several days.

Physical activity increases blood flow. This could potentially spread the toxin to unintended areas and reduce its effectiveness at the injection site. It also increases the risk of bruising.

Exercise also contracts your muscles, which may decrease the toxin’s effectiveness.

However, it is safe to do facial exercises like:

●     frowning

●     smiling

●     raising your eyebrows

These movements can help the effects of Botox show up sooner.

Go makeup-free

If you receive a Botox injection in your face, take a break from makeup for 24 hours. Applying makeup will rub the skin, potentially dispersing the toxin.

Sit up

Sit up for the first 4 hours after getting Botox. Bending or lying down might spread the toxin and promote bruising.
